The Holland Places of Worship Festival (HPOWF), which looks to see buildings of all denominations and faiths open their doors, will take place the weekend of Saturday and Sunday, September 9 and 10, and organisers are looking for more buildings to take part. Several churches have already offered themselves up to the planned free event, including Boston Stump, Boston Baptist and St Mary’s Church in Sutterton. HPOWF chaiman Jane Brady said: “It is about promoting and celebrating the places of worship in this region.” The event is inspired by the hugely-successful West Lindsey Churches Festival, and churches can take part with as much or as little activity as they like. The West Lindsey event has, however, seen guided tours, craft fairs, art exhibitions and musical performances take place, as well as the offering of refreshments. The HPOWF will cover historic Holland which is made up of Boston Borough, South Holland and North Holland District Council areas. Jane said: “The festival has already generated a lot of interest, and it is an exciting development for the area “Thousands of tourists go to West Lindsey every year, and there is no reason why this festival shouldn’t grow to be as successful. “Many of our churches are still at the heart of their communities. “They can offer insight into the history and life of their parishes. “Some are architectural gems, with beautiful stained glass, carvings and artefacts. “And, they all have stories – whether funny, sad, or historically important. “It is a chance for visitors – and some faith communities – to discover hidden treasures about our area.” Churches interested in taking part, have until Friday, February 10, to get listed in the Heritage Lincolnshire brochure, or April 14 for inclusion in the Holland POWF booklet. The only requirement is that buildings should be open and free to enter on the weekend dates given. A contribution is also asked towards marketing costs.
